Cinco De Mayo Meets Cinque di Maggio

Mary Davidek • May 4, 2015

Cinco de Mayo, much like St. Patrick’s Day, has become a celebration that extends far beyond its origins—bringing people together through food, drink, and shared traditions. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Growing up in a Mexican-American influenced community in Southern California, Cinco de Mayo meant gathering with friends, visiting the local carnicería, and preparing for a feast filled with bold flavors and vibrant dishes. The aromas of grilled carne asada, slow-cooked carnitas, and fresh tortillas created an unforgettable sensory experience.

From salsa fresca and guacamole to smoky barbacoa tacos and spicy chile verde, each dish brought layers of flavor and tradition to the table. And while margaritas and cerveza often take center stage, wine has its place in the celebration as well.

Italian varietals like Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese offer bright fruit and natural acidity, making them surprisingly compatible with bold, spicy dishes.

The Best Guacamole

Although avocados already contain natural oils, adding olive oil enhances texture and creates a smoother, more balanced guacamole.

Ingredients

  • 2 large ripe Haas avocados
  • ½ small lemon, juiced
  • 1 small roma tomato, diced
  • 1 cup finely chopped cilantro
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • ½ tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Combine all ingredients, mix gently, and serve fresh with your favorite dishes.

Whether you’re celebrating with tacos, wine, or both, Cinco de Mayo is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the fusion of flavors and cultures.
