Silence of the Lamb Shanks
In all honesty, Halloween has never been my favorite holiday. I don’t have a sweet tooth, I never liked to dress in costumes, and fright movies terrify me. With three older brothers, I was often the victim of pranks and shenanigans, and I am quite certain my irrational fear of monkeys and primates can be traced to their mischief. The only aspect of Halloween I truly warmed to was that it marks the beginning of the holiday season. Fall and winter vegetables replace summer fruits, and the harvest takes center stage. Bring out the blankets and enjoy the spices in the crisp autumn air.
Even if fright-night festivities are on the agenda, perhaps a cozy dinner party with friends followed by a movie is more appealing. And just because Halloween spotlights pumpkins and candy corn doesn’t mean we should forget food and wine pairing. Take a cue from one of cinema’s most iconic villains—Hannibal Lecter. Disturbing as he may be, he certainly knew how to pair his meals with the right wine. Plus, his love for Italian wine makes him a fitting (if eerie) inspiration. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
Savor this Halloween with a comforting classic—fava beans and a nice Chianti (Sangiovese, of course). Pop in a movie and enjoy.
Silence of the Lamb Shanks
Easy Crock Pot Lamb Shanks
Brown lamb shanks in grapeseed oil in a large pan.
Season generously with salt and pepper.
Place browned shanks into a crock pot and top with the following:
- 1/2 cup red wine
- 1/2 cup beef stock
- 1 can (14 oz) Italian-style diced tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 8–10 cloves diced garlic
- 4 large sliced mushrooms
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 sweet onion, sliced
Cook on low for 6–8 hours. Remove shanks and plate with sauce and vegetables.

Mushrooms, tomatoes, garlic, broth, and red wine create a rich, flavorful sauce.
Sangiovese , the primary grape of Chianti, brings bright cherry notes and structure, making it a perfect pairing.

Enjoy lamb shanks, fava beans, and Chianti—Halloween style.
Happy Halloween!
